New York State Senator John C. Liu is inviting New Yorkers to contribute personal mementos to a community time capsule commemorating America’s 250th anniversary. The initiative aims to give residents an opportunity to share their “hopes and dreams” for the future while preserving a snapshot of life in the present day.

According to a statement from Liu’s office, community members may submit “photos, artwork, letters, or other present-day memorabilia or messages” intended for future generations. The contributions should reflect current realities as well as aspirations for the years ahead. Items must be small, approximately the size of a deck of cards, and submissions may be declined if they do not meet size or material requirements.

Residents will have the opportunity to contribute items during Senator Liu’s America 250 Celebration on June 28 at Francis Lewis High School, beginning at 1 p.m.

The event will feature free food, live music, games, activities, and historical reenactments. It will conclude with the placement of submitted items into the time capsule.

Following the celebration, the time capsule will be transferred to the Main Street branch of the Queens Public Library in Flushing, where it will remain on public display for the next 50 years. The capsule is scheduled to be opened during the nation’s tricentennial celebration on July 4, 2076.

State Senator Liu encouraged community participation, asking, “If you could leave one message to the world 50 years from now, what would it be? Would it be a statement of hope? A piece of art? A letter to your grandchildren? On this 250th anniversary of our country’s founding, we’re asking our neighbors to reflect on how far we’ve come as Americans and to share what’s possible for the future.”

The senator said the time capsule will preserve the community’s collective aspirations for future generations and “serve as a living record of our voices and values as Americans that will offer insights and wisdom to our fellow Americans celebrating the tricentennial in 2076. I invite everyone in our community to participate in this fun and meaningful, once-in-a-generation opportunity.”

For additional information, community members may contact Senator Liu’s office at 718-765-6675 or via email at liu@nysenate.gov.
