US Representative Ro Khanna (D-CA), and CEO of the Center for American Progress Action Fund (CAP), Patrick Gaspard, will hold a joint press call on October 28, 2024, to discuss the critical need for emergency election preparations on tech platforms.
“During the 2020 election, Meta deployed several emergency measures to reduce the risk of political violence, uphold election integrity online and offline, and protect the American people during a fragile and critical democratic moment in history,” noted a statement from CAP on October 23, 2024. “Four years later, it is unclear whether Meta and other platforms have any of these measures in place for the upcoming election. Ahead of Election Day, these platforms should be required to disclose their current efforts to address similar harmful content that could sow chaos during the 2024 election.”
The statement highlighted the increasing risk of political violence surrounding the upcoming November election, particularly in light of a tight presidential race. Many of the threats of violence and calls for undermining democracy are propagated through major social media platforms, which play a significant role in disseminating harmful content.
