Indian American Congressman Suhas Subramanyam (VA-10) has been appointed by House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries to serve on the bipartisan Congressional-Executive Commission on China (CECC) for the 119th Congress. The appointment, announced on July 16, 2025, underscores Subramanyam’s continued commitment to advocating for global human rights.
In his new role, Congressman Subramanyam will collaborate with colleagues across the aisle, as well as the Senate and Executive Branch, to address international human rights issues and transnational repression.
“I look forward to working across the aisle and with the Senate and Executive Branch to protect human rights, stop transnational repression, and address concerns Virginians have brought to me about the Chinese Communist Party,” said Congressman Subramanyam in a statement. “Many Uyghur Muslims live in Northern Virginia, and I will also use this platform to share their stories and address human rights abuses they and others have endured.”
Democratic Leader Jeffries praised the appointment, citing Subramanyam’s dedication and experience.
“For over two decades, the Congressional-Executive Commission on China has been instrumental in protecting human rights and the rule of law in China and around the world,” said Jeffries. He added that Subramanyam’s “tireless work ethic, willingness to reach across the aisle and experience uplifting the stories of Uyghur and other diaspora communities in his district make him an invaluable addition to the Commission.”
“I look forward to seeing him continue his important, bipartisan work to speak out against persecution and oppression in this new role,” he said.
Established by Congress in October 2000, the CECC is tasked with monitoring human rights conditions and the rule of law in China. It submits annual reports to both the President and Congress, informing U.S. policy on issues such as religious freedom, freedom of expression, and political imprisonment.
Congressman Subramanyam also serves on the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission, which promotes and defends human rights worldwide.
