On July 8, 2024, President Joe Biden sent a two-page letter to fellow Democrats on Capitol Hill in response to increasing calls pressurizing him to withdraw from the Presidential race after his poor debate performance against former President and Republican nominee, Donald Trump.
In the letter, President Biden noted “I can respond to all this by saying clearly and unequivocally: I wouldn’t be running again if I did not absolutely believe I was the best person to beat Donald Trump in 2024” adding “We had a Democratic nomination process and the voters have spoken clearly and decisively.”
He also stated that he received over 14 million votes, which accounts for 87 per cent of the total votes cast throughout the entire nominating process. With nearly 3,900 delegates supporting him, he is the presumptive Democratic Party nominee by a significant margin.
Amidst growing calls for his withdrawal, President Biden will host NATO leaders in Washington from July 9-11, and address critical matters facing the Alliance.
On July 5th, at a campaign rally in Madison, Wisconsin, he declared to the enthusiastic crowd “I am not letting one 90-minute debate wipe out, three and a half years of work…And I and you are not finished yet” while emphasizing that he was not dropping out and that he is running again to win.
For the enthusiastic crowd who chanted “let’s go Joe, let’s go Joe,” he responded “I’m the sitting president of the United States of America in no small part, because of you. Not a joke. In 2020 you came through for me. I’m a nominee of the Democratic Party. I am a nominee of this party because millions of Democrats like you just voted for me in primaries all across America…”
Some people don’t care who you voted for; they are trying to push me out of the race, he pointed out while asserting “Let me say this as clear as I can, I am staying in the race. I’ll beat Donald Trump. I’ll beat him again in 2024. I learned long ago, when you get knocked down, you get back up.”
