Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the Indian diaspora as the “Ambassadors of India,” emphasizing their role in uplifting the nation’s global reputation. “Because of you, I get the opportunity to hold my head high with pride,” he said, addressing the 18th edition of Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) on January 9, 2025, in Bhubaneswar, Odisha.
PM Modi remarked, “I have always considered the Indian diaspora as ambassadors of India. I feel immense joy when I meet all of you from around the world, when I converse with you. The love I receive from you is something I can never forget. Your affection, your blessings always stay with me.”
Amid enthusiastic cheers from diaspora members, PM Modi expressed gratitude, saying, “Thank you. Because of you, I get the opportunity to hold my head high with pride in the world. Over the past 10 years, I have met many leaders from around the world. Every world leader praises the Indian diaspora, all of you.”
Honoring PBD’s Legacy
Highlighting the significance of Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, PM Modi noted that it commemorates Mahatma Gandhi’s return to India on this day in 1915 after a long stay abroad. “Your presence in India at such a wonderful time adds to the festive spirit,” he said, adding that this year’s event is particularly special as it follows the birth centenary of late Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
He further said the late Prime Minister’s vision was instrumental in institutionalizing this program to strengthen the bond between India and its diaspora. Together, “We celebrate India, Indianness, our culture, our progress, and connect to our roots,” PM Modi stated.
Acknowledging Global Contributions
PM Modi credited Indian Americans and the global diaspora for promoting Indian social values abroad. “We are not just the ‘Mother of Democracy,’ but democracy is a part of our life, it is our way of living. We don’t have to be taught diversity; our life itself runs on diversity. That’s why wherever Indians go, they integrate with the society there.”
He highlighted how Indians abroad uphold local rules and traditions, contribute to the growth and prosperity of their adopted countries, and maintain a strong emotional connection with India. India continues to beat in their hearts as they rejoice in every happiness and achievement of the nation, he said.
India’s Transformational Journey
PM Modi also underscored India’s achievements over the last decade, including lifting 250 million people out of poverty and becoming the 5th largest economy in the world. “The day is not far when India will become the 3rd largest economy,” he predicted.
He mentioned milestones like the production of “Made in India,” fighter jets and transport aircraft, envisioning a future where diaspora members would travel to PBD on Indian-made planes. India’s talent is being celebrated worldwide today. Indian professionals are driving global growth through major companies around the world, he noted.
On January 10th, several diaspora members will be honored with the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman by President Draupadi Murmu, he said while congratulating the awardees.
Strengthening Global Ties
Emphasizing the government’s commitment to the diaspora, PM Modi said, “Your safety and welfare are a top priority. We consider it our responsibility to help our diaspora during crisis situations, no matter where they are. This is one of the guiding principles of India’s foreign policy today. Over the last decade, our embassies and offices worldwide have been sensitive and pro-active.”
He highlighted improvements in consular services, including the opening of 14 new embassies and consulates in the past two years. Additionally, the scope of Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cards has been expanded to include PIOs up to the 7th generation in Mauritius and the 6th generation in Suriname, Martinique, and Guadeloupe.
To enhance the cultural connection, PM Modi mentioned that he inaugurated a special Pravasi Bharatiya Express train, which will take 150 participants to 17 tourism and faith-related destinations in India.
Vision 2047: A Developed India
Looking ahead to 2047, PM Modi urged the diaspora to contribute to India’s development, just as they had supported India’s independence in 1947. “Thanks to your hard work, India has become the number one country in the world for remittances,” he said.
He encouraged diaspora members to introduce non-Indian friends to India and appealed to young diaspora members to participate in quizzes and programs like ‘Study in India’ and the ICCR scholarship scheme to strengthen their connection with the country.
“India is known today as the ‘Vishwa Bandhu,’ a friend of the world,” PM Modi said, recommending diaspora communities organize award functions in their countries to honor local achievers and deepen bonds. “The Indian embassy and consulate in that country will be more than happy to assist you. This will strengthen your personal connection with the people of that country and deepen your emotional bond with them,” he added.
Promoting ‘Made in India’
PM Modi urged Indians abroad to play a significant role in promoting Indian products globally. He encouraged them to buy Indian-made food, clothing, and goods, emphasizing the importance of making local products global.
