New York City Mayor Eric Adams has hailed NYPD Officer Didarul Islam, a Bangladeshi immigrant and one of four victims killed in the July 28, 2025, Midtown Manhattan shooting, as a “hero and protector.”

The tragic incident unfolded at 345 Park Avenue on July 28 evening, where a lone gunman opened fire, leaving multiple individuals injured, according to the NYPD.

“Officer Didarul Islam died as he lived, a hero and protector of New York City,” said Mayor Adams. “We will never forget you.”

In honor of Officer Islam and the victims of the mass shooting, Mayor Adams announced that “all flags on all city buildings and stationary flagstaffs throughout the five boroughs” would be flown at half-staff until further notice.

NYPD Commissioner Jessica S. Tisch added, “May Police Officer Didarul Islam’s memory be a blessing.”

The NYPD released a statement emphasizing Officer Islam’s service and valor. “Police Officer Didarul Islam represented the very best of our department. He was protecting New Yorkers from danger when his life was tragically cut short today. We join in prayer during this time of incomprehensible pain. We will forever honor his legacy.”

Several Indian American elected officials also expressed condolences and paid tribute to Officer Islam.

New York City Mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani shared personal details about Officer Islam, noting that he joined the NYPD four years ago and lived in Parkchester with his pregnant wife, two young children, and elderly parents.

“When he joined the police department, his mother asked him why he would pursue such a dangerous job,” Mamdani said. “He told her it was to leave behind a legacy that his family could be proud of. He has done that, and more. I pray for him, his family, and honor the legacy of service and sacrifice he leaves behind.”

New York State Assemblywoman Jenifer Rajkumar echoed the sentiment noting, “A hero lost. Officer Didarul Islam stood for courage, duty, and love of community. We must always honor his sacrifice. My heart is with his family and all who served beside him.”

New York City Council Member Shekar Krishnan described the event as the “deadliest shooting in NYC in 25 years,” adding “Once again, our city is horrified and grieving due to senseless gun violence. My heart goes out to Officer Islam’s wife & children, all the victims’ loved ones, and everyone affected by this tragedy.”

Krishnan also extended his gratitude to the first responders who swiftly arrived on the scene to protect the city.
