On April 3, 2025, a powerful gathering took place at one of New York City’s most iconic venues—the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE)—where global diplomacy and AI innovation met at the AI Leadership Global Summit. 

Hosted by the NYC Mayor’s Office for International Affairs, this summit united a dynamic group of AI pioneers, tech CEOs, diplomats, and policymakers to address the future of artificial intelligence, emphasizing responsible innovation, public-private partnerships, and shaping inclusive ecosystems for AI technology.

The summit made it clear: AI is not just the future—it is already the present, and New York City is at the forefront of harnessing its immense potential for social good, economic growth, and sustainability.

A Visionary Opening by Mayor Eric Adams

The event kicked off with an electrifying address by Mayor Eric Adams of New York City. As a former programmer, Mayor Adams highlighted the pivotal role of AI in transforming urban governance and enhancing city services. His bold message was clear: New York City is committed to becoming a global leader in AI, both in governance and innovation, through the launch of its AI Action Plan. His leadership and vision set the tone for the day, framing AI not just as a technological advancement, but as a tool for improving lives, advancing equity, and fostering collaboration across sectors.

Yann LeCun’s Keynote: The Future of Machine Learning

One of the most anticipated moments of the summit came with a keynote by Yann LeCun, Chief AI Scientist at Meta and Professor at New York University. LeCun, a pioneer in machine learning, shared his insights on the rapid advancements in artificial intelligence, particularly in deep learning and generative AI. His thoughts on building ethical, transparent AI systems resonated with the audience, emphasizing that the future of AI must be rooted in responsible innovation that benefits all communities—ensuring accessibility, fairness, and accountability.

The day was filled with thought-provoking discussions, with key themes focused on building AI ecosystems that promote trust, access, and diversity. Experts discussed how AI can enhance public-sector services, from improving urban planning and public safety to fostering global diplomacy.

Chris Lu, former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, and Edward Mermelstein, commissioner of the NYC Mayor’s Office for International Affairs, delved into the intersection of technology and global governance, stressing the importance of international collaboration in the development of ethical AI policies. 

Adding to the conversation, Dilip Chauhan, deputy commissioner for Trade, Investment & Innovation at NYC, emphasized the pivotal role of AI in fostering economic growth, highlighting its potential to transform industries and improve lives. Chauhan reinforced that AI ecosystems need to be built on partnerships between governments, businesses, and academic institutions to ensure AI’s responsible and equitable deployment across sectors.

AI Startups and Innovation

A key highlight of the summit was the spotlight on the AI startup ecosystem, where cutting-edge innovations in industries such as fintech, climate tech, and healthcare were showcased. One of the standout companies was Agentic AI, a promising startup that has garnered significant attention for its work in generative AI and automation technologies.

With representatives from tech giants like Microsoft and Meta, as well as visionary founders from the AI startup world, the summit highlighted the diverse range of applications for AI. The event was a reminder that AI is already a transformative force, with the potential to disrupt entire industries and create entirely new ones.

The summit also hosted a series of panels focused on how AI is already transforming various sectors. In the AI & Public Sector Transformation panel, experts discussed the role of AI in improving public services, urban planning, and public safety. Representatives from Microsoft and TIME CO₂ spoke about the revolutionary ways in which AI can help cities tackle critical issues like climate change and resource management.

Another panel, titled AI & Business Innovation, explored AI’s disruptive influence on industries ranging from finance and healthcare to education. Entrepreneurs and investors like Winston Ma from NYU and Dragon AI, and Tiffany Luck from NEA, discussed the challenges and opportunities that come with building businesses around emerging AI technologies. AI startups were also spotlighted, with companies like Arthur AI, Agentic AI, and Zencity showcasing how AI is reshaping industries by driving innovation and creating entirely new business models.

A core theme of the summit was the crucial role of public-private partnerships in driving AI innovation. As Aissata M.B. Camara, and Chauhan noted, AI can only truly flourish when governments, businesses, and academic institutions come together. Collaboration is essential to ensuring that AI is deployed ethically, equitably, and responsibly across various sectors.

The AI Leadership Global Summit brought together an extraordinary lineup of industry leaders and innovators who are shaping the future of AI. Other speakers included Matthew Fraser, Chief Technology Officer at the NYC Office of Technology & Innovation; Shyla Raghav, Chief Climate Officer & Co-Founder of TIME CO₂; Igor Lys, Founder of Gambit; Howie Wachtel, Senior Director at Microsoft; Eyal Feder-Levy, CEO & Co-Founder of Zencity; Michael Concannon, CTO at Stylitics; Andrew Tibbetts, Shareholder at Greenberg Traurig LLP; Caesar Sengupta, Co-Founder & CEO of Arta Finance; Adam Wenchel, CEO of Arthur AI; and David Cheng, CTO at Arbor Biotechnologies. 

These distinguished experts discussed various aspects of AI’s evolution—from the technological innovations at the heart of AI systems to the legal, ethical, and economic implications of their widespread adoption. Their insights offered a comprehensive view of how AI can reshape industries, cities, and societies.

Deputy Consul General of the Czech Republic, Michael Kaplan, shared his key takeaway from the summit: “the need for stronger communication across government, business, and academic sectors to ensure an inclusive and responsible development of AI. His words underscored the summit’s overarching message that collaboration on a global scale is crucial for the ethical advancement of AI.”

The AI Leadership Global Summit was a testament to New York City’s pivotal role in the AI revolution. It emphasized the city’s commitment to fostering innovation, inclusivity, and ethical standards in AI.
