On May 27, 2025, NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan announced the appointment of Dr. Anitha Srinivasan as Chief Medical Officer (CMO), effective June 1.

According to a press release from the hospital, Dr. Srinivasan will succeed Dr. John T. Pellicone, who is stepping down after a decade of service in the role. A veteran of Metropolitan Hospital for over 20 years, Dr. Srinivasan brings extensive experience to the position.

“She is the first woman Chief Medical Officer at Metropolitan Hospital, currently one of two female CMOs across the 11 NYC Health + Hospitals hospital facilities, and the only woman of color in that role,” the statement noted.

Dr. Srinivasan began her career within the NYC Health + Hospitals system in the 1990s, completing a surgical residency at NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln. After several years in academic research, she joined Metropolitan Hospital as an attending surgeon and associate professor of surgery at New York Medical College, where she continues to serve.

She founded the Metropolitan Breast Cancer Center and has led it as Director since 2017. In 2019, she was named Deputy Chief Medical Officer, and in 2020, she took on additional responsibilities as Director of Perioperative Services. With this appointment, Dr. Srinivasan becomes the third individual to hold the title of Chief Medical Officer at Metropolitan.

“I am honored and humbled to step into the role of Chief Medical Officer at a place that has been my professional home for over 20 years. As a surgeon, educator, and hospital administrator, I have seen firsthand the strength and resilience of our patients and staff,” said incoming CMO Dr. Srinivasan. “It is especially meaningful to serve as the first woman CMO of this facility, and I carry that responsibility with deep pride and purpose. Together, we will continue to deliver high-quality care to the communities who rely on us, and work to ensure every voice is heard and each patient is seen.”

“We are deeply grateful to Dr. Pellicone for his years of outstanding leadership, clinical insight, and steadfast commitment to our mission,” said NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan Chief Executive Officer Julian S. John. “His contributions over the past decade have left a lasting mark on Metropolitan, transforming patient care and expanding the breadth of services we provide.”

CEO John also expressed strong confidence in Dr. Srinivasan’s leadership. “Dr. Srinivasan brings a combination of surgical expertise, academic leadership, and a deep understanding of the needs of the communities we serve,” he said. “She will lead with the same compassion, vision, and excellence that have defined her career.”

“It has been an extraordinary privilege to serve as Chief Medical Officer alongside such a talented and mission-driven team,” said outgoing CMO Dr. John T. Pellicone.
