The Democratic Lieutenant Governors Association (DLGA) has announced an initial investment of $1 million to support Indian American State Senator Ghazala Hashmi’s campaign for Lieutenant Governor of Virginia. The announcement comes just one week after Hashmi clinched the Democratic nomination in a closely contested primary.
According to a DLGA statement released on June 27, 2025, this contribution is the largest ever made to a lieutenant governor campaign in Virginia and is twice the amount currently being invested by the Republican Governors Association in the state.

“The DLGA is proud to make this historic $1 million investment in support of Ghazala Hashmi’s campaign for Lieutenant Governor—the largest ever made to a lieutenant governor candidate in Virginia,” said DLGA Chair and Pennsylvania Lt. Governor Austin Davis. “As a State Senator, Ghazala has been a tireless champion for Virginians – leading efforts to protect Medicaid, safeguard access to reproductive healthcare, and strengthen Virginia’s public schools.”
Davis emphasized that the stakes of the upcoming election are especially high, citing “the ongoing chaos of the Trump administration,” increasing living costs, and “Trump-ordered layoffs” affecting Virginia’s federal workforce. He noted that the DLGA is committed to working with Hashmi to achieve a historic victory in November.
Hashmi faces Republican nominee John Reid, who supports a 16-week abortion ban, advocates for deep cuts to the federal workforce while endorsing controversial tariffs, promotes school voucher programs, opposes gun safety reforms, and has aligned himself closely with former President Donald Trump’s agenda.
