The National India Hub (INDIA HUB) hosted INDIA FEST 2025 on August 16 in Schaumburg, Illinois, marking one of the largest Indian Independence Day celebrations in the United States. The event drew more than 3,000 attendees and participation from over 70 organizations.

The highlight of the festivities was the presence of cricket legend Yuvraj Singh, India’s World Cup hero, whose appearance elevated the celebration to historic proportions. Singh joined elected officials, community leaders, and residents in honoring the 79th anniversary of India’s independence.

Visibly moved by the passion of the crowd, Singh reflected on the experience of seeing thousands chant “Vande Mataram” and dance to Bollywood music despite heavy rainfall.

“What I witnessed here today is nothing short of extraordinary—the true spirit of India, celebrated with courage, love, and unity, even in the toughest weather,” he said. Although the downpour prevented him from walking the full parade route, Singh expressed regret at not being able to personally greet every group. “I wish I could have shaken hands with each one on the team,” he added.

The parade showcased over 100 organizations with elaborate floats, traditional attire, and cultural performances, reflecting India’s diversity—from Bharatanatyam dancers of Tamil Nadu to Bhangra troupes of Punjab. Children waved handmade flags, elders shared stories of India’s freedom struggle, and young professionals networked amid the celebrations.

Behind the scenes, more than 200 volunteers worked tirelessly to ensure the event’s success. Clad in rain gear, they managed logistics, directed traffic, set up emergency shelters, and kept spirits high despite challenging weather.

Harish Kolasani, founder of INDIA HUB, praised their dedication. “Our volunteers and community members have proven that INDIA HUB is not just a place; it is a movement, a voice, and a second home for thousands,” he said. The event was coordinated by Sireesha Tipparaju, with co-coordination from Smita Shah, Surender Patel, and Usha Bhaskar, whose planning turned a rain-soaked day into a triumph.

Beyond the parade, INDIA FEST 2025 served as a platform for service and community engagement. A Health Fair offered free check-ups, consultations, and workshops on issues such as diabetes management and mental health. An Eye Camp provided screenings and eyeglasses to those in need, while a Blood Drive collected life-saving donations.

Friendly competitions also energized the festival, with more than 500 participants competing in Carrom, Chess, Table Tennis, Singing, and Dance contests. The Grand Mela brought added excitement with handicraft stalls, jewelry displays, book exhibitions, and concerts blending classical Indian ragas with modern fusion music.

The celebration also carried policy significance. State Senator Laura Ellman announced a new bill on “Dignified Cremation,” co-sponsored by Senator Ram Villivalam and supported by Representative Janet Yang Rohr and others. The legislation, inspired by community leader Saily Joshi, seeks to recognize and respect religious practices such as Asthi Visarjan—the sacred immersion of ashes in holy rivers. Singh and Kolasani joined Joshi onstage for the announcement.

Kolasani emphasized its importance: “This announcement is proof of what community vision and unity can accomplish. We are proud that INDIA HUB initiated ‘PROJECT MOKSH’ to replicate this bill across the United States, which will be coordinated by Saily Joshi, serving generations to come across the nation.”

Looking ahead, INDIA HUB plans a “Success Meet” with leaders and volunteers to reflect on lessons from the event and prepare for future celebrations. INDIA FEST 2026 is already on the calendar for August 15, 2026. “We’re building on this momentum,” Kolasani said. “INDIA HUB will continue to unite, celebrate, and serve.”
