The White House Historical Association has launched a new collection of original presidential watercolor caricatures by New York-based artist Shreyas Navare, a commemorative artist for America250, the congressionally authorized nonpartisan organization leading the nation’s celebration of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
According to a statement from Navare, the inaugural collection featuring George Washington is now available at the White House History Shop inside The People’s House: A White House Experience, the Association’s educational attraction at 1700 Pennsylvania Avenue, as well as the gift shop at the White House Visitor Center. The collection will also be offered through the White House Historical Association’s online store in the near future.
The debut collection includes a museum-quality matted print, greeting card, brass bookmark, and framed magnet. Additional presidential designs will be introduced as the collection expands.
The statement said the collection is based on Navare’s original watercolor series depicting all 47 U.S. presidents and marks the first public release from his forthcoming coffee table book, HAIL TO THE CHIEFS! Celebrating America at 250: Presidential Caricatures in Watercolor. The book includes a foreword by Stewart D. McLaurin.
Each illustration is paired with a historically significant presidential quotation, offering readers a visual journey through more than two centuries of American history while honoring every presidency with equal artistic care in a nonpartisan manner.
“Every presidency has contributed a chapter to the American story,” said Navare. “My goal was to portray each president with equal artistic respect and historical dignity, inviting people to reflect on shared history as the nation marks its 250th anniversary.”
In the foreword to HAIL TO THE CHIEFS!, McLaurin writes: “As the United States approaches the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence… we have before us both an invitation and an obligation: to look back across the full sweep of the American presidency with clear eyes and open minds. Shreyas Navare has answered that call with rare distinction. In these pages, he offers us a lesson from each presidency, rendered in stunning watercolor…”
Navare’s original artworks are part of the permanent collection of the Library of Congress. He previously served as an editorial cartoonist for the Hindustan Times and has published two collections of political cartoons through HarperCollins. He also served as a Fellow at Harvard University Weatherhead Center for International Affairs.
Proceeds from sales of the collection will support the White House Historical Association’s nonprofit mission to preserve and share the history of the White House.
Based in New York, Navare is a cartoonist, creative entrepreneur, and commemorative artist for the U.S. Semiquincentennial. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, and his original watercolor caricatures are part of the permanent collection of the Library of Congress.
He is the former editorial cartoonist for the Hindustan Times, one of India’s leading English-language newspapers, and has published two collections of political cartoons and caricatures through HarperCollins. He previously served as a Fellow at Harvard University’s Weatherhead Center for International Affairs.
