Secretary of State Marco Rubio Discusses Terrorism, Immigration, and Trade with Pakistan and India

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio held a phone call with Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, expressing appreciation for Pakistan’s role in arresting and handing over ISIS-K operative Mohammad Sharifullah to American authorities.

The two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to continued cooperation in counterterrorism efforts. Secretary Rubio also highlighted the need for enhanced collaboration on law enforcement and addressing illegal immigration, according to a statement from State Department Spokesperson Tammy Bruce.

Trade was another key topic, with both officials discussing reciprocal U.S. tariffs on Pakistani goods and ways to move toward a more equitable and balanced trade relationship. Secretary Rubio also explored possibilities for joint work on critical minerals and the potential to increase commercial engagement for U.S. businesses in Pakistan.

Additionally, the conversation touched on shared global priorities during Pakistan’s current two-year term as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, which began on January 1, 2025.

Secretary Rubio’s Call with Minister Jaishankar 

Secretary Rubio also spoke separately with India’s Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar. They reaffirmed the strong U.S.-India strategic partnership and explored opportunities to expand cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region. The discussion also included reciprocal tariffs and advancing a balanced trade relationship between the two nations.
