India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the Indian diaspora for their significant role in strengthening ties between India and the United States, highlighting the achievements of his government over the past decade, at a major community event on September 22, 2024, in Long Island, New York. The event was attended by 15,000 people from across the United States.
In his speech, PM Modi acknowledged the contributions of the Indian American community in enhancing the India-US relationship, emphasizing their vital role in bridging the two democracies. He recalled his recent meeting with President Biden on September 22nd at the latter’s home in Delaware, expressing appreciation for the President’s “compassion and respect.” Modi remarked that this “special gesture reflected the trust the Indian community has built with the United States.”
Additionally, the Prime Minister announced plans to open two new Indian consulates in Boston and Los Angeles, as well as the establishment of a Thiruvalluvar Chair of Tamil studies at the University of Houston. He stated, “These initiatives will further strengthen the living bridge between India and its diaspora in the United States,” expressing hope that the diaspora members would continue to play a significant role in furthering ties between India and the U.S.
In discussing his vision for a developed India by 2047, Prime Minister Modi remarked that his historic third term, stemming from the largest democratic exercise in human history, has fueled his commitment to advancing India with increased dedication. He pointed to the significant transformations India has undergone in the past decade, including the establishment of next-generation infrastructure, lifting 250 million people out of poverty, and progressing from the 10th largest economy to the 5th largest, with ambitions to become the third largest economy in the world.
The Prime Minister emphasized the government’s dedication to enacting reforms that align with the aspirations of the populace. He noted a newfound vibrancy in the nation, driven by innovation, entrepreneurship, start-ups, financial inclusion, and digital empowerment, all contributing to growth and prosperity. He also highlighted the profound impact of women-led development and green transitions at the grassroots level.
Furthermore, the Prime Minister acknowledged India’s significant role in global growth, prosperity, peace and security, climate action, innovation, supply chains, and addressing global skill shortages. He stated that India’s voice now resonates more deeply and powerfully on the global stage.
