India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated Donald Trump on his swearing-in as the 47th President of the United States on January 20, 2025.
Describing the event as a “historic inauguration,” PM Modi expressed optimism about renewed collaboration between the two nations. “I look forward to working closely together once again to benefit both our countries and shape a better future for the world. Best wishes for a successful term ahead,” he stated.
India’s Foreign Minister, S. Jaishankar, attended the ceremony at the U.S. Capitol as PM Modi’s special envoy. Seated in the front row alongside other key dignitaries, Minister Jaishankar later tweeted, calling it a “great honor to represent India at the inauguration ceremony,” of President Trump and Vice President JD Vance.
Following the event, Minister Jaishankar engaged with prominent members of the U.S. government, including Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, Senate Majority Leader John Thune, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. He also met with nominees for key roles in the incoming administration including Indian American Kash Patel, who was picked for FBI Director.
During the ceremony, Jaishankar also met with Foreign Ministers of the Quad countries, including Takeshi Iwaya of Japan and Penny Wong of Australia. Minister Jaishankar also met with them separately to review bilateral cooperation and address critical developments concerning the Quad.
Notable Indian Americans such as Google CEO Sundar Pichai, entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, and Chairman of Reliance Industries Limited, Mukesh Ambani, were also present at the inauguration.
Ambani along with his wife Nita Ambani also attended the private reception hosted by President Trump on January 19th.
