Life Lessons for a New Year: Embrace the Journey, not the Destination

As we step into a new year, it’s easy to feel the weight of expectations and resolutions — or even the uncertainty of what’s next. I’m not here to lecture or to tell you how to live your life. I’m just here to share a few reflections from my own journey.

If you’re feeling lost, confused, or struggling, you’re not alone.

Life doesn’t come with a roadmap, and we all face moments that challenge us to our core. My hope in sharing my story is that it offers a bit of perspective — or at least a reminder that even in the toughest times, there’s always a path forward.

A Career Full of Lessons

Professionally, I’ve had a unique journey. My path has crossed public, private, and nonprofit sectors, including serving in the Obama White House and two federal agencies. I’ve learned what leadership and service look like at the highest levels. I’ve shared ideas with leaders, spoken to rooms full of diverse audiences (from 3 to 3,000), and contributed to meaningful policies that benefited our communities.

But career success didn’t mean an easy ride. For every door that opened, there were others that slammed shut. I’ve felt the sting of rejection and wrestled with doubts about whether my voice truly mattered. Yet, I kept going — writing a book, earning degrees, and trying to make a difference.

Personal Triumphs and Trials

The most transformative lessons, though, came outside the workplace.

I’ve loved deeply, gotten married, and faced the pain of divorce. Some relationships were abusive and left scars that took time to heal; others restored my faith in love and connection. I’ve battled and survived cancer — a fight that taught me resilience in ways no career challenge ever could.

Through it all, I’ve learned to embrace life’s uncertainties and take bold risks. I even ran for office, not because I was guaranteed to win, but because I genuinely wanted to make an impact in my community.

Lessons That Shaped Me

Here are the truths I’ve come to understand through life’s twists and turns:

  • Life Isn’t Fair — and That’s Okay.
We spend too much time expecting fairness, only to be blindsided when life proves otherwise. Accepting that life is inherently unfair can actually free you from unnecessary stress.
  • Failure Isn’t the End; It’s a Step Forward.
It’s terrifying to put yourself out there. But failure, when approached the right way, is a teacher. You might fail at what you want, but at least it’s a failure you can live with because you followed your dreams.
  • Your Timing Is Never Wrong.
Trust the timing of your journey. It’s easy to feel like you’re falling behind, but everyone’s path is unique. You’re exactly where you’re supposed to be.
  • Healing Opens Doors.
Trauma teaches us to close our hearts, but healing teaches us to open them — with boundaries. Not everyone is meant to stay in your life forever, and that’s okay. Some people are like boosters on a rocket: they fall away when you reach a certain altitude.
  • Heroes and Villains Are Made by Choices.
Heroes and villains often share the same backstory. The difference is what they choose to do with their pain.
  • God is in the Details.
I’ve learned to see challenges as opportunities for growth. God isn’t handing me courage or patience — He’s giving me opportunities to develop those traits.
  • Helping Others Heals You.
When life feels overwhelming, helping others puts things into perspective. It’s a reminder that we’re all connected and that even small acts of kindness can create ripples.

Practical Wisdom for the Journey

  • Don’t wait for permission to follow your dreams.
  • When you’re stuck, ask, “What is this trying to teach me?”
  • Focus on solutions instead of dwelling on problems.
  • Take stock of what you have right now — it’s easy to lose sight of your blessings.
  • Set boundaries. Giving is beautiful, but it’s okay to communicate your needs.

Final Thoughts

The journey of life is full of lessons we never asked for but desperately need. I wouldn’t change any of my experiences, because they’ve shaped the person I am today.

If you’re struggling, know this: you’re not alone.

Trust your path, embrace your timing, and remember that your story is still unfolding.
