A 22-year-old Indian student, Sai Teja Nukarapu, from Telangana, was tragically shot dead outside a gas station in Chicago, during a robbery attempt, on November 29, 2024.
Teja had recently moved to the United States to pursue an MBA at Concordia University in Chicago, after completing his Bachelors in Hyderabad. To support himself, he worked part-time at the gas station.
According to news reports, Teja’s uncle, Talluri Srujan, revealed that two armed suspects entered the store where Teja was working and demanded money. Despite complying and handing over the cash, Teja was shot outside the store shortly afterward. The suspects fled the scene, and authorities are actively investigating the incident.
Demanding a swift action against the culprits, the Consulate General of India in Chicago noted “We are shocked and deeply sad at the murder of Indian Student Nukarapu Sai Teja. We demand immediate action against the culprits. Consulate will extend all possible help to the family and friends of the victim.”
“Deeply grieved at this news. Our Consulate is rendering all possible assistance to the family,” tweeted India’s Foreign Minister, S Jaishankar.
Leaders from Telangana in India and members of the Telugu Association of North America are working together to provide support for Teja’s grieving family.
