For the past decade, Minnesota-based nonprofit Vidya Gyan has expanded educational opportunities for young people while recognizing academic excellence on both sides of the globe.

Since 2015, it has worked closely with its sister organization, Vidya Gyan India, to improve learning outcomes in rural government schools through initiatives focused on reading, writing and holistic student development.

Marking its tenth anniversary and celebrating a “Dynamic Decade of Impact,” the organization introduced the inaugural VIDYA Scholarship for outstanding graduating seniors from public high schools across Minnesota’s Twin Cities. The awards were presented at Milan Hindu Mandir in the presence of students, families, community leaders and supporters.

The Sanskrit word Vidya signifies education, knowledge and learning. It also stands for Vision for Inclusive Development of Young Aspirants, reflecting the organization’s mission to nurture future leaders through education and character.

The first scholarship cohort comprised ten exceptional students heading to some of America’s leading universities. They were selected for academic excellence, leadership, resilience, community service and a commitment to creating positive change. Applicants were required to maintain a minimum GPA of 3.8 and submit an essay on either applying the principles of Dharma in today’s world or describing a time they chose what was right over what was easy.

The essays impressed the selection committee with their maturity, originality and integrity, making the final choice highly competitive. Each recipient received a $500 scholarship and a Certificate of Achievement.

Vidya Gyan simultaneously launched the scholarship program in rural India, recognizing ten outstanding eighth-grade students from government schools. The scholarships will support their education through Grades 9-12, subject to continued academic performance, while providing mentorship and encouragement during their formative years.

The twin initiatives underscore Vidya Gyan’s belief that talent exists everywhere and that opportunity, guidance and mentorship can unlock lasting potential.
