India Leads Global Celebration of Hindi Diwas at the United Nations, Showcasing Language’s Cultural and Diplomatic Reach

The Permanent Mission of India (PMI) to the United Nations (UN) in New York hosted the annual Hindi Diwas celebration at the UN Headquarters on October 9, 2025, with Member States underscoring the significance of Hindi on the global stage.

The event drew a distinguished gathering that included a visiting delegation of Members of Parliament (MPs) from India, Permanent Representatives (PRs), Deputy Permanent Representatives (DPRs), diplomats from Girmitiya nations, descendants of Indian indentured laborers, as well as representatives from friendly countries and UN personnel.

Addressing the event, leader of the Parliamentary delegation, P. P. Chaudhary, emphasized that Hindi is not merely a language but “symbolizes India’s spirit, identity, and unity.” Highlighting Hindi’s growing global resonance, he noted that nearly 600 million people speak the language worldwide.

Chaudhary also reflected on the “instrumental role of Hindi in India’s freedom struggle” and outlined the Government of India’s initiatives to promote its global reach, according to PMI.

Permanent Representative of India to the UN, Ambassador P. Harish, explained that Hindi Diwas commemorates the adoption of Hindi as one of India’s two official languages, alongside English. He lauded India’s multilingual heritage and reaffirmed the country’s leadership in advocating for multilingualism within the UN system.

Recalling India’s past as a co-sponsor of UN resolutions on multilingualism, Ambassador Harish noted that India continues to popularize Hindi at the UN, including through financial backing of the Hindi@UN project.

Permanent Representative of Nepal, Ambassador Lok Bahadur Thapa, spoke of Hindi’s widespread use in Nepal and its role in strengthening cultural, social, and linguistic bonds between the two nations.

Permanent Representative of Suriname, Ambassador Sunil Algram Sitaldin, observed that Hindi has been preserved across five generations in his country and has blended harmoniously with local traditions.

Permanent Representative of Mauritius, Ambassador Milan Meetarbhan, underlined the enduring cultural and diaspora ties between India and Mauritius, noting the central role of Hindi in these connections.

Permanent Representative of Andorra, Ambassador Joan Rovina, highlighted India’s partnership in promoting multilingualism at the UN, particularly through joint work under the Group of Friends on Multilingualism.

Permanent Representative of Trinidad and Tobago, Ambassador Neil Parsan, described Hindi as “not just a language, but the voice of a nation; it is poetry, it is history and it is an emotion.”

Deputy Permanent Representative of Guyana, Trishala Simantini Persaud, spoke about Hindi’s deep influence on everyday life in Guyana. DPR of Burundi, Landry Sibomana, an alumnus of the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) program, recalled his time in India as his “second home.”

Speaking in Hindi, Sibomana expressed his fluency in several Indian languages, while Deputy Permanent Representative of Micronesia, Universe Lawrence, underscored the growing ties between her country and India.

Director of the UN Department of Global Communications, Nanette Braun, affirmed that Hindi remains a priority in the UN’s multilingual communications efforts.

During the event, MPs from India honored the winners of Hindi competitions organized by PMI and presented certificates.

The Parliamentary delegation, led by P. P. Chaudhary, is visiting New York from October 8–14, 2025. Other members include N.K. Premachandran, Dr. Nishikant Dubey, Poonam Ben Maadam, Vivek Tankha, Captain Brijesh Chowta, Gaddam Vamsi Krishna, Mathukumilli Sribharat, Rajeev Rai, S. Phangnon Konyak, Dr. Medha Vishram Kulkarni, and Ujjwal Deorao Nikam.
