The Permanent Mission of India (PMI) to the United Nations and the UN Department of Global Communications (DGC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to renew the Hindi@UN Project for another five years, from April 1, 2025, to March 31, 2030.
India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador P. Harish, and Under-Secretary-General for Global Communications Melissa Fleming formalized the agreement during a special ceremony at PMI on February 26, 2025. The event was attended by senior UN officials, diplomats, and other distinguished guests.

Speaking at the ceremony, Ambassador Harish highlighted that the renewal reaffirms the Indian government’s commitment to promoting Hindi, including its presence as a non-official language at the UN. He described the renewal as “a testimony” to India’s long-standing dedication to multilingualism.
USG Fleming underscored the growing role of social media in modern communication and the DGC’s focus on reaching Hindi speakers through the Hindi@UN initiative. She emphasized the project’s efforts to maximize the use of social platforms to disseminate UN messages in Hindi.

The Hindi@UN Project was first established in 2018 with the goal of broadcasting UN news in Hindi. India has pledged $1.5 million annually for the next five years, in addition to its cumulative contribution of $6.8 million to date.
On February 13th, PMI celebrated World Hindi Day in New York with the theme “Multilingualism and the Promotion of Hindi Abroad.”

Established by the Indian government on January 10, 2006, World Hindi Day aims to promote and popularize the Hindi language globally. Since its inception, it has been observed annually worldwide.
India’s Minister of State for Women and Child Development, Savitri Thakur, the Guest of Honor at the event, reflected on the day’s origins and emphasized India’s rich multilingual and multicultural heritage. She highlighted ongoing efforts to enhance Hindi’s global recognition and advocated for its designation as an official UN language.
USG Fleming also participated at the World Hindi Day celebrations and praised India’s efforts, popularizing the language.
