Hemant M. Shah, chair of the Trade Committee of the Canadian Hindu Chamber of Commerce and a long-time advocate of Canada–India economic ties, has voiced strong optimism about the trajectory of bilateral relations. Shah, who has championed the partnership for more than five decades, said recent developments signal that both countries are ready to engage with “seriousness and sincerity.”

Shah pointed to recent visits by Canadian ministers Anita Anand and Maninder Sidhu, along with the expected trip by Prime Minister Mark Carney to India, as clear indicators of growing momentum. He also noted India’s strong presence at global forums such as the G7 and the recent visit of Dr. S. Jaishankar.

“These visits are not only diplomacy but also destiny taking shape,” he said.

According to Shah, the Indo-Canadian community will play a defining role in rebuilding trust and shaping the next chapter of the relationship. “And I say this from my heart: the Indo-Canadian diaspora will be the soul of this renewed relationship. Our community has always loved Canada deeply and remained emotionally connected to India. Now is the moment to rise, speak, and guide what is best for Canada’s economy and future,” he noted.

Shah urged both governments to restart negotiations on a Free Trade Agreement without delay, saying the global environment is shifting rapidly. “We cannot afford to stand still when such a powerful partnership is right within our reach,” he said.

Reflecting on decades of work advancing bilateral business and cultural ties, Shah said his “heart is genuinely full” as relations show signs of revival.

“To witness Canada–India relations come alive again, after years of strain and silence, feels nothing short of inspiring,” he said. “I have dedicated my life to building bridges between our two nations and seeing Prime Minister Mark Carney take this courageous and visionary step brings me immense hope. It is the kind of leadership we were waiting for… and truly deserving of.”

He also remarked that the relationship had suffered setbacks in recent years, leaving communities and businesses uncertain. In his view, the Carney government recognizes India’s growing global stature and economic influence, as well as the strategic importance of renewed engagement.

Shah argued that shifting global dynamics, including “the harsh reality of President Trump’s tariffs,” highlight the need for Canada to expand its markets. He said India is a natural and trusted partner, particularly for sectors such as natural gas, energy, agri-food, minerals, and environmental technologies.

“Our countries are made to collaborate – natural gas, energy, agri-food, minerals, environmental solutions – our strengths fit together like pieces of a puzzle,” he said, emphasizing that the relationship rests on more than six decades of shared values and people-to-people ties.

Shah reiterated his belief that the Indo-Canadian diaspora will remain central to strengthening the renewed partnership. “I say this from my heart: the Indo-Canadian diaspora will be the soul of this renewed relationship,” he added.
