Former Indian Ambassador to the United States, Taranjit Singh Sandhu, has been appointed the 21st Lieutenant Governor of Delhi.
Sandhu will succeed Vinai Kumar Saxena in the role. In a statement issued on March 5, Rashtrapati Bhavan announced Sandhu’s appointment along with the naming of eight other individuals as Governors of different states.
Sandhu served as India’s Ambassador to the United States from February 2020 until January 31, 2024. During his tenure in Washington, he was widely credited with strengthening ties between the United States and India and supporting key diplomatic engagements, including the 2023 state visit of Narendra Modi to the United States.
After retiring from the Indian Foreign Service, Sandhu joined the Bharatiya Janata Party and unsuccessfully contested the 2024 Lok Sabha election from Amritsar.
Prior to his posting in Washington, Sandhu served as India’s High Commissioner to Sri Lanka from January 2017 to January 2020. Earlier in his diplomatic career, he was posted at the High Commission of India in Colombo as Head of the Political Wing from December 2000 to September 2004, among other assignments.
Born on January 23, 1963, into a family of educators, Sandhu studied at The Lawrence School, Sanawar and graduated with honors in History from St. Stephen’s College. He later earned a Master’s degree in International Relations from Jawaharlal Nehru University.
Sandhu is married to Reenat Sandhu, a former Ambassador of India to the Netherlands. The couple has two children. His personal interests include books, films, and outdoor sports.
