FIA NY-NJ-CT-NE Celebrates Indian Diaspora Women Leaders at 8th Annual International Women’s Day Event in New York

The Federation of Indian Associations (FIA) NY-NJ-CT-NE, one of the oldest and largest nonprofit grassroots organizations representing the Indian diaspora across eight Northeastern states, hosted its 8th Annual International Women’s Day celebration on March 6, 2026, at India House in New York City.

Now in its eighth year, the signature event honors accomplished women leaders from the Indian diaspora who have overcome barriers and inspired communities across the United States through their achievements in sectors including business, media, finance, and social entrepreneurship, according to a statement from FIA.

The evening’s program was emceed by Riddhi Parikh Patel, who opened the event with a moment of silence in memory of Radha Subramanyam, a previous award recipient who recently passed away.

FIA President Sreekanth Akkapalli, who assumed office on January 1, 2026, highlighted the organization’s strong support for women leaders. He expressed appreciation for the contributions women have made to society and congratulated the honorees on behalf of FIA Chairman Ankur Vaidya, as well as the organization’s Board, Trustees, and Executive Committee. Akkapalli also introduced the evening’s special guest, Ambassador Binaya Srikanta Pradhan, Consul General of India in New York.

In his address, the Consul General emphasized that women’s empowerment is central to national progress. He highlighted several initiatives in India aimed at supporting women and girls, including the “Beti Bachao Beti Padhao” campaign promoting girl child education and the Ujjwala Yojana program providing clean cooking fuel. He also referenced economic initiatives linking 100 million households to 9 million women-led self-help groups and efforts to build the world’s largest pipeline of women in public office. During his remarks, he expressed gratitude to his wife for her unwavering support.

Honorees at the event received Certificates of Recognition from New York Governor Kathy Hochul, along with FIA sashes and trophies.

Jody Lynne Herkloz, Chief Operating Officer of Northstar Strategies, encouraged women to continue uplifting and supporting one another. Dr. Balpreet Grewal-Virk, Senior Vice President at Robert Wood Johnson Barnabas Health, commended FIA for its role in strengthening the community. She also credited the courage of her parents, the resilience of immigrants, and the support of her husband for her journey.

American actress Reshma Shetty spoke about motherhood and the importance of preserving cultural heritage for her 10-year-old child. Tania Kinsella, First Deputy Commissioner of the New York Police Department, dedicated her honor to her mother and grandmothers, describing it as a reflection of generational progress in overcoming traditional barriers. Monalisa Shuvadarshini, wife of Consul General Pradhan, also expressed appreciation for the recognition and the opportunity to be part of the celebration.

The evening concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by FIA General Secretary Srishti Kaul Narula, followed by a special dinner. Since its founding in 1970, FIA has played a key role in strengthening India–U.S. ties through cultural events, advocacy, and community service for the Indian diaspora across the Northeastern United States.
