The monsoon season can create hair trouble for most people, with increased moisture, scalp build-up, frizz and hair fall among the common concerns. Many also experience increased hair shedding during the rainy season. While some hair loss is natural, poor scalp hygiene can worsen dandruff, itching and fungal infections.

A consistent hair care routine can help keep these problems under control.

Use the Right Comb

Choose a wide-tooth comb, preferably neem, with sufficient space between the teeth. It helps prevent breakage and reduces frizz.

Keep your comb clean and wash it regularly to prevent the accumulation of dirt and microbes. Always comb gently, beginning at the ends and working upwards towards the roots. Avoid combing wet hair, which is more prone to breakage. During the monsoon, never share combs, as this can increase the risk of fungal infections.

Keep Hair Manageable

Keeping hair short or trimming it regularly can make monsoon hair care easier. Humidity causes damaged hair to absorb moisture, making frizz and split ends more noticeable.

Regular trimming removes split and damaged ends and prevents splitting from travelling further up the hair shaft. Trimming every eight to 12 weeks can help maintain healthier-looking hair and reduce the pulling and tugging caused by tangled lengths.

Keep Your Scalp Clean

Healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp. During the monsoon, frequent washing removes dirt, oil, sweat and product build-up, reducing the risk of scalp irritation and infection.

Washing the hair three to four times a week with a gentle shampoo can work well, depending on your hair and scalp type. Gentle scalp massage can also improve circulation and support scalp health. If you use a hair-growth serum, apply it to the scalp and massage gently with your fingertips.

Protect Hair from Rainwater

Rainwater can pick up pollutants and impurities from the atmosphere. When it remains on the scalp, it may contribute to irritation and itching.

Protect your hair with an umbrella or raincoat whenever possible. If your hair gets wet, wash it with a gentle shampoo as soon as possible. If immediate washing is not possible, dry it gently with a soft microfiber towel, which absorbs moisture quickly and causes less friction than rough towels.

Maintain a Healthy Diet

Hair health also reflects nutritional health. Hair follicles need essential nutrients to produce strong, healthy hair, making a balanced diet important in maintaining hair growth and strength.

Choose fresh, nutritious foods over junk food. Include lean proteins, eggs, fish, lentils, nuts, seeds, dark leafy vegetables, citrus fruits and whole grains in your diet. These provide the proteins, vitamins and minerals needed to support healthy hair.

With attention to scalp hygiene, grooming, protection and nutrition, monsoon hair problems can be managed more effectively.
