Washington, DC mayoral candidate Rini Sampath has officially become the first South Asian to appear on the ballot for mayor in the city’s history.
Sampath was born in Theni, Tamil Nadu, India, and moved to the United States at the age of seven.
“It’s so meaningful to me to be the first South Asian person to make the ballot for DC Mayor. I moved to the United States when I was seven years old in pursuit of the American dream, and I’m in this race to make sure that dream actually works for DC residents,” Sampath said.
Sampath noted that more than 4,500 people signed her petition to secure a place on the ballot. She also highlighted the broader contributions of the South Asian community, while pointing to its limited representation in government.
“I hope my candidacy inspires others to run and do good for their neighbors, and I hope you’ll join our campaign,” she added.
