As the Milano Cortina 2026 enters its final stretch, attention has turned once again to a familiar rivalry. After falling to the United States in the women’s ice hockey final, Canada will meet its North American rival in the men’s gold-medal game, setting up a highly anticipated championship clash.
Day 14 featured decisive performances across disciplines, from ice hockey and biathlon to freestyle skiing and speed skating. Norway strengthened its lead atop the medals table, while the United States held on to second place. Host nation Italy remained third.
Men’s Ice Hockey Final Confirmed
Canada advanced to the final with a dramatic 3-2 semifinal victory over Finland, scoring on a power play with 35 seconds remaining. The United States secured its place with a 6-2 win over Slovakia.
Finland had built a 2-0 lead before Canada responded through Shea Theodore and Nathan MacKinnon to complete the comeback. The result sends Canada to its first Olympic final since winning gold at Sochi 2014.
Team USA, powered by two goals from Jack Hughes in the semifinal, will compete in its first gold-medal game since the Vancouver 2010 final.
Freestyle Skiing: Ferreira Completes Medal Set
American freeski athlete Alex Ferreira captured gold in the men’s halfpipe with a score of 93.75 on his final run, completing his full set of Olympic medals after bronze in Beijing 2022 and silver in PyeongChang 2018. Estonia’s Henry Sildaru took silver with 93.00, while Canada’s Brendan Mackay earned bronze.
In the men’s aerials, Wang Xindi of the People’s Republic of China executed a double full-double full-full to score 132.60, narrowly defeating reigning world champion Noé Roth by 1.02 points. Li Tianma completed a Chinese 1-3 finish. Wang’s victory followed his wife Xu Mengtao’s successful defense of her women’s aerials title earlier in the week.
Germany’s Daniela Maier won her first Olympic gold in the women’s ski cross, adding to her bronze from Beijing 2022. Switzerland’s Fanny Smith secured silver, becoming the first athlete to win three Olympic ski cross medals, while Sweden’s Sandra Näslund finished third.
Biathlon: Norway Adds to Medal Tally
Norwegian biathlete Johannes Dale-Skjevdal claimed gold in the men’s 15km mass start, finishing in 39:17.1 after a flawless shooting performance. Teammate Sturla Holm Laegreid took silver, while France’s Quentin Fillon-Maillet earned bronze. The medal marked Fillon-Maillet’s fourth of these Games and ninth overall, making him France’s most decorated Olympian across both Winter and Summer Games.
Speed Skating and Short Track Highlights
Dutch speed skater Antoinette Rijpma-de Jong won gold in the women’s 1500m with a time of 1:54.09, edging Norway’s Ragne Wiklund and Canada’s Valerie Maltais. The victory extended the Netherlands’ unbeaten Olympic streak in the event since Vancouver 2010.
In short track, the Dutch quartet led by Jens van ’t Wout won gold in the men’s 5000m relay, finishing in 6:51.847 ahead of the Republic of Korea and Italy. Defending champions Canada placed fourth.
In the women’s 1500m, Kim Gilli led a Republic of Korea 1-2 finish, narrowly defeating defending champion Choi Minjeong in 2:32.076. American Corinne Stoddard claimed bronze.
Curling Finals Set
Sweden and Switzerland advanced to the women’s curling final after semifinal victories over Canada and the United States, respectively. Sweden’s Anna Hasselborg is assured of a third consecutive Olympic medal, following gold in PyeongChang 2018 and bronze in Beijing 2022.
Switzerland reached its first Olympic women’s curling final since Turin 2006. In men’s curling, Switzerland claimed bronze with a 9-1 win over Norway.
