Lawmakers Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) and Brad Wenstrup (R-OH) introduced House Resolution 1382, strongly condemning the assassination attempt on Republican Presidential Nominee, and former US President, Donald Trump during a political rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13, 2024.

The resolution introduced on July 24, 2024, by Indian-American Krishnamoorthi, a Democrat, and Wenstrup, a Republican, emphasized that “political violence has no place in America,” and called for unity among Democrats and Republicans disavow such acts. It stressed the importance of resolving political difference peacefully in the resolution.

Highlighting a steady increase in political violence over the past decade, the resolution recalled “Whereas, on January 8, 2011, a domestic terrorist opened fire on then-Representative Gabby Giffords and killed 6 people and injured 12 others; whereas, on June 14, 2017, a domestic terrorist opened fire on Republican members of Congress at a baseball practice, gravely wounding Representative Steve Scalise and staff who were present.”

The resolution highlighted a nearly tenfold increase in threats against election officials, judges, and lawmakers since 2016 as reported by the United States Capitol Police, emphasizing that political violence poses a fundamental threat to “democracy and American ideals.”

The assassination attempt on former President Trump must be “categorically condemned by everyone who believes in democracy,” it stated adding President Joe Biden urged, “There is no place in America for this kind of violence. We must unite as a nation to condemn it.”

Former President Trump said, “In this moment, it is more important than ever that we stand United, and show our True Character as Americans, remaining Strong and Determined, and not allowing Evil to Win.”

Due to the potential for escalating violence following an assassination attempt on President Trump, the resolution emphasized the importance of political leaders from both parties and all government levels to consistently and frequently denounce political violence.
