Indian American lawmakers and groups have expressed their support for Democratic Party Presidential nominee, Kamala Harris’s decision to select Governor of Minnesota Tim Walz as her running mate.

Harris, the first South Asian and Black woman to secure the Presidential nomination of a major political party, announced Governor Walz as her running mate on August 6, 2024. “As a governor, a coach, a teacher, and a veteran, he’s delivered for working families like his. It’s great to have him on the team. Now let’s get to work,” noted Harris.

“It is the honor of a lifetime to join Kamala Harris in this campaign. I’m all in,” said Governor Walz adding “Vice President Harris is showing us the politics of what’s possible. It reminds me a bit of the first day of school.”

Both Vice President Harris, and Governor Walz jointly addressed a campaign rally in Pennsylvania, a battleground state crucial for Democrats in the upcoming general elections.

After the announcement from VP Harris choosing Governor Walz as her running mate, Governor of Pennsylvania, Josh Shapiro, who was on the short list for VP potentials, tweeted, “Over the next 90 days, I look forward to traveling all across the Commonwealth to unite Pennsylvanians behind my friend Kamala Harris and Tim Walz and defeat Donald Trump.”

Expressing support for the selection of Governor Walz by VP Harris as her running mate, Indian American (IA) Impact referred to Governor Walz as “someone who consistently demonstrates how progressive policies can improve lives.”

“The Harris-Walz ticket unites the Democratic coalition and will be a voice for every American,” added IA Impact.

Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi said, “Governor Tim Walz is an exceptional public servant and an even better person. As a veteran, coach, and teacher, his blend of experience makes him an outstanding choice to be our nation’s next Vice President.”

“I commend Vice President Harris on her outstanding choice of Governor Walz as a running mate,” said Lieutenant Governor of Maryland, Aruna Miller. “Whether leading a state or a nation, we need leaders with moral conviction and a talent for finding common ground. This is the kind of partnership Joe Biden had with Barack Obama, the kind Kamala Harris has with Joe Biden, and the kind Tim Walz will bring to the 47th President of the United States.”

Indian American Virginia State Senator, Ghazala Hashmi said, “I’m delighted. Tim Walz will be our next VP! For months now, I’ve been saying that Tim is what a real governor looks like: focused on his people; determined that no child is hungry in school; unafraid to call out the ‘weird.’ Now we say Tim, not JD, is what a real VP looks like.”

New York State Assemblywoman Jenifer Rajkumar commended VP Harris for showing “leadership and judgement,” in picking Governor Walz as her running mate. “I am honored to be a delegate at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago this August where I will help organize for the Kamala-Walz ticket at the national and local levels. The top priority of Team Jenifer is to turn out in full force to ensure victory for Kamala Harris,” she added.
