Two months after their initial phone conversation, India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Canada’s Foreign Minister Anita Anand met on the sidelines of the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on September 29, 2025, in New York.
The meeting focused on advancing India–Canada relations, building on “productive discussions” between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Prime Minister Mark Carney during the G7 Leaders’ Summit held in Kananaskis, Alberta, in June. Prime Minister Modi attended the summit at Carney’s invitation, and the Canadian leader also addressed the UN General Assembly.
According to both ministers, shared priorities such as economic prosperity, security cooperation, and global governance will remain central to the partnership. They also welcomed recent progress in bilateral relations, including the appointment of new high commissioners in Ottawa and New Delhi.
Minister Anand highlighted the importance of Canada’s diplomatic presence abroad, noting that high commissioners “play a key role in promoting Canadian trade and investment, providing services to Canadians abroad and enabling dialogue between countries.”
She further emphasized that Canada remains committed to deepening commercial ties with India, particularly in sectors such as agricultural products, critical minerals, and energy.
Minister Jaishankar expressed optimism about welcoming his Canadian counterpart to India soon. Speculation on social media suggests that Anand may visit India as early as next month.
Both Jaishankar and Anand also held a series of bilateral engagements with other foreign ministers on the UNGA sidelines and agreed to remain in close contact to advance their countries’ partnership.
