Ek Din With Aamir Khan

It was a day (Ek Din) with Aamir Khan, three days short of his 61st birthday that falls on March 14.

The media witnessed the trailer of his latest production, Ek Din, which features his son, Junaid Khan (now already two films old with Maharaj and Loveyapa) and Sai Pallavi, the fairly seasoned South actress in her Hindi debut. The film is based on the Thai movie, One Day (2016). Kunal Kapoor and Pragati Mishra also star in the film.

Directed by Sunil Pandey and written by Sneha Laapataa Ladies Desai and Spandan Mishra, the film has music by Ram Sampath (Aamir Khan’s pet composer, who has done his TV show, Satyameva JayateTalaash, Peepli [Live], Delhi Belly, Laapataa Ladies and the background score for Sitaare Zameen Par) and lyrics by Irshad Kamil (making his entry into the Aamir Khan ‘camp’ after working in home productions of Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan!). Manoj Lobo, the cinematographer, was also present along with film editor Ballu Saluja.

Aamir Khan introduced the team and stated that as per his original wish, he had wanted Ek Din to be his son’s first release. That was also, he said, because his breakthrough film, Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, was released on 29th April, 1988 and the release date of this film was as ‘Friday’ close as possible on May 1.

Director Sunil Pandey, who has been assistant director or second unit director on films as varied as Laal Singh Chaddha, Kabir Khan’s series The Forgotten Army – Azaadi ke liyeDelhi Belly, Taare Zameen Par and Rang De Basanti, told me that he resonated most with emotions in different genres.

The film has been shot in Japan and Aamir admitted that the country was thrice as expensive as any other. “However, when you see the film, you will realize why I chose that location. This is a classic love story after a long time.”

This is the first time, I reminded him, that has been shot in Japan after a full 60 years—the last one being Love in Tokyo.
