Indian American Congressman Suhas Subramanyam (D-VA-10) has recognized T. Vishnudatta Jayaraman, Ph.D., Editor-in-Chief of South Asian Herald, with a commendation in the Congressional Record during the proceedings of the 119th Congress in the U.S. House of Representatives.

On August 25, 2025, Congressman Subramanyam – the first Indian American elected to Congress from Virginia – stated, “Mr. Speaker, I rise today to honor an extraordinary constituent, Dr. T. Vishnudatta Jayaraman, for his exemplary career in journalism, foreign policy, and his contributions to the Indian American community.”

The Congressman noted that in 2024, Jayaraman founded South Asian Herald, where he continues to serve as Editor-in-Chief. He praised the outlet for consistently delivering high-quality journalism and balanced coverage of South Asian affairs, including U.S. and global institutions such as the White House, United Nations, U.S. Congress, World Bank, and International Monetary Fund.

Since its inception, Congressman Subramanyam said, South Asian Herald has grown rapidly in reach and reputation, emerging as an “influential voice” within the diaspora. He emphasized Jayaraman’s “continuing impact and enduring commitment” to uplifting the South Asian community.

The commendation noted that Jayaraman’s career began after graduating from the University of Madras where he received a Master’s Degree in Journalism and Mass Communication, as well as a Doctoral Degree in International Relations. Jayaraman also holds a Master’s Degree in Diplomacy and International Relations from Seton Hall University, New Jersey.

The commendation will be permanently preserved in the Library of Congress.

This is not the first time Jayaraman’s contributions have been formally recognized. He has earned special honors from Governors, Members of Congress, State elected officials, and community organizations.

As a Virginia State Senator in 2024, Subramanyam introduced a special resolution in the State Senate on March 4, 2024, honoring Jayaraman’s work in journalism and foreign policy. The resolution passed unanimously on March 8.

Following its passage, Virginia Lieutenant Governor Winsome Sears, who presides over the Senate, acknowledged Jayaraman in the Senate Gallery. “Part of a democracy and I think probably the very first part is that the media be free. And we are so glad that you are there to help remind us of that. Hence, for all the accolades that you’ve received, we can congratulate you,” she said, inviting Senators to extend him a warm welcome.

Earlier that year, on February 28, 2024, Kannan Srinivasan, the first Indian American immigrant elected to the Virginia House of Delegates, now serving as a State Senator, also honored Jayaraman on the House Floor. The commendation recognized his receipt of the Distinguished Service Award from the then U.S. Ambassador to India Taranjit Sandhu and Lieutenant Governor Sears during India’s Independence Day celebrations organized by NCAIA in Virginia.

Virginia House Speaker Don Scott also felicitated Jayaraman on the House Floor, underscoring the broad recognition of his work at both the state and national levels.

Recently, Jayaraman was recognized with a special citation from the Lieutenant Governor of Rhode Island, Sabina Matos, for his “commitment to ethical journalism and strengthening community dialogue,” in Massachusetts. Additionally, Treasurer of Loudoun County in Virginia, Henry C. Eickelberg, also presented an award recognizing Jayaraman for his excellence in “community journalism.”
