Canada delivered one of its most successful days at the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026, securing medals in short track speed skating and advancing in men’s ice hockey to rise to 11th in the overall standings. The Canadian team now holds four gold, four silver, and six bronze medals.

Dubois Claims Short Track Gold

Canada’s Steven Dubois powered to Olympic gold in the men’s 500m short track speed skating final, winning in 40.85 seconds with a commanding front-running performance. Exploding off the start, Dubois led into the opening corner and maintained control across all four and a half laps, fending off late pressure.

Melle van ’t Wout of the Netherlands finished just 0.06 seconds behind in 40.91 to take silver, while Jens van ’t Wout claimed bronze in 41.92.

The victory marked Dubois’ first individual Olympic gold. He previously won bronze at Beijing 2022 and silver earlier at Milano Cortina 2026 in the mixed relay. It was his fifth career Olympic medal.

Bronze in Women’s Relay

Canada added bronze in the women’s 3,000m short track relay. Danae Blais, Florence Brunelle, Kim Boutin, and Courtney Sarault led for much of the race before settling for third in 4:04.314, just three tenths of a second behind gold medalists Republic of Korea. Italy took silver.

For Sarault, it was her fourth medal of these Games, following silver in the mixed relay and 1,000m, and bronze in the 500m.

Canada Survives Overtime Scare in Hockey

In men’s ice hockey, Canada edged Czechia 4-3 in overtime in a dramatic quarter-final in Milan to secure a place in the semi-finals.

After an earlier 5-0 preliminary round win over Czechia, Canada faced a far more aggressive opponent this time. Macklin Celebrini opened the scoring, but Czechia responded through Lukáš Sedlák and David Pastrňák to lead 2-1 after the first period.

Nathan MacKinnon tied the game in the second period. Ondřej Palát restored Czechia’s lead midway through the third before Nick Suzuki equalized with just over three minutes remaining.

Mitch Marner scored the overtime winner to keep Canada’s gold medal hopes alive.

Shiffrin Leads USA Charge

The United States maintained third place in the medal standings, highlighted by Mikaela Shiffrin’s gold in women’s slalom. Shiffrin recorded a combined time of 1:39.10 to win her second Olympic slalom title, 12 years after her first.

Camille Rast of Switzerland finished second, while Sweden’s Anna Swenn Larsson took bronze.

Klaebo Extends Historic Run

Johannes Hoesflot Klaebo continued his remarkable Olympic campaign, anchoring Norway to gold in the men’s team sprint free in cross-country skiing. The victory marked his fifth gold medal of these Games and his 10th overall, extending his record as the most successful Winter Olympic gold medalist.

Klaebo secured victory with a decisive break on the final uphill section, finishing 1.37 seconds ahead of Team USA.

Other Highlights Across the Snow and Ice

Sweden’s Jonna Sundling and Maja Dahlqvist won gold in the women’s team sprint free, narrowly defeating Switzerland. Germany secured bronze.

China’s Xu Mengtao successfully defended her women’s aerials title, earning her second Olympic gold in the event. Su Yiming added another gold for China in men’s snowboard slopestyle, upgrading his silver from four years ago.
