The Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University in New York State, recently named an Indian-American, Natarajan Balasubramanian, as the inaugural Albert & Betty Hill Professor, effective July 1, 2024.

“With a Ph.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles, Balasubramanian joined the Whitman School in 2009. His research focuses on understanding economic value creation by new and existing firms, using large-scale data to uncover generalizable facts and how competition, innovation and learning affect the entry and performance of firms,” said a statement from the Whitman School adding Professor Balasubramanian teaches undergraduate and graduate students at the School in strategic management, firm performance, technological change and industry evolution.

“It is quite rare that a school installs a new endowed professorship, but when we do it’s to celebrate the outstanding accomplishments of our best scholars and world-class thinkers who are significantly influencing their field,” said Interim Dean at the Whitman School of Management, Alex McKelvie. “Professor Balasubramanian is very deserving of this achievement, and this professorship will provide him resources to further his research and positively impact the reputation of the Whitman School.”

Professor Balasubramanian has a robust publication record in prestigious journals such as Management Science, Review of Economics and Statistics, and Strategic Management Journal.

According to the statement, the professorship was endowed with a $1 million bequest from the late Robert S. Hill ’69, a School of Management graduate. This generous donation honors his parents, Albert and Betty (Grossman) Hill, and expresses gratitude for the personal support he received from the University. Hill’s intention was to enhance the institution’s reputation and excellence.
