Netflix dropped the trailer of Maa Behen, a topsy-turvy and whacky crime comedy where white lies spiral out of control, suspicions run wild and a dysfunctional mother-daughter trio must somehow survive their biggest mess-up yet. The show streams from June 4.
Produced by Abundantia Entertainment in association with Opening Image Films and directed by Suresh Triveni, this dark comedy follows three women as they try to hide a dead body while dealing with nosy neighbors, and their own quirky family dynamics. The film introduces unique characters like Rekha (Madhuri Dixit), Jaya (Triptii Dimri), Sushma (Dharna Durgaa), Guptaji (Ravi Kishan), his wife Guptain (Geetanjali Kulkarni), Maheshwari (Arunoday Singh) and Manas (Shardul Bhardwaj).
The first three are the protagonists and are named as per the vintage radio jingle for Nirma, a leading detergent, and that’s just the comic beginning. Rekha is the mother who is adventurous (she even starts a wine business named Sanskaari— meaning traditional!!—Wine Shop!). One daughter (Jaya) looks and behaves in a deceptively simple manner, while her sister Sushma will not stop at any scruple to claim high followers on her social posts.
The trailer showcased the madness surrounding Rekha, Jaya and Sushma, who are already struggling to survive each other before the worst strikes them. What follows is a complete rollercoaster of panic, cover-ups, emotional meltdowns and hilariously questionable decisions.
Director and co-producer Suresh Triveni stated,“With Maa Behen, we wanted to tell a story that feels both rooted and wildly entertaining, backed by terrific performances. Collaborating with Netflix and Abundantia on something this unique has been incredibly exciting, and with a cast led by Madhuri, Triptii, Dharna, and Ravi, Gitanjali, Arunoday and Shardul the madness only became more magical.”
Triveni added that he still does not believe he has got to work with Madhuri and promised that (having worked with Anil Kapoor in Subedaar this year), he will try and get the once-magical pair again together! Anil and Madhuri are known for blockbusters like Tezaab, Ram Lakhan, Kishan Kanhaiya and Total Dhamaal besides scoring high in Parinda and Khel.
Madhuri Dixit added, “Rekha is not your typical Hindi cinema mother, and that’s exactly what made the character so exciting for me. As an actor, it’s incredibly rewarding to explore layered, unpredictable roles that challenge the audience’s expectations. Rekha may not be a perfect mother, but like any mother, she wants the best for her daughters and tries to hold her family together amidst all the chaos.”
Dixit added that when Triveni came for the narration, she could not at first believe that any film could have such a title, for maa behen karna is slang for intentionally ruining someone or something. Over here, the story was of a mother and two sisters, and after the narration, she realized that it was the perfect title!
Triptii Dimri, who has worked with Dixit earlier in the super-hit, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3, gushed about the actress’ human qualities, stating that Dixit was ever there to help put co-actors if they were unsure about any scene. “She never behaved like a superstar!” she raved. “Sharing space with the legend, someone who made an entire generation fall in love with cinema, is truly surreal. I’m grateful to Netflix and Abundantia Entertainment for trusting me with Maa Behen and a character that will truly surprise audiences.”
Ravi Kishan stated,“After the success of Maamla Legal Hai Season 2, I am excited for audiences to now witness my work with Maa Behen. While working on this film, I was surrounded by some incredibly talented co-stars, and that brought such a refreshing energy. Thanks to Maa Behen, I finally got the opportunity to share screen space with Madhuri-ji. She is so graceful and versatile and elevates every scene. And she swoked so hard on her Bhojpuri dialect that one will never believe that she is a Maharashtrian. Triptii and Dharna are immensely talented. The entire cast and crew were wonderful to work with, and it truly became a memorable collaboration.”
Dharna Durga admitted, “The moment I read the script and my character, I knew she was going to be an absolute blast to play. What I enjoyed the most was the camaraderie between Rekha, Jaya, and Sushma, despite all the fighting, madness, and kaand (mess-up). There’s this very real bond that keeps the family together on and off-screen. Working alongside Madhuri Dixit ma’am was honestly dreamlike. My equation with Triptii in the film creates a comedy riot, one that’s incredibly entertaining. Suresh-sir has been an anchor throughout, allowing us to fully lean into the madness and have real fun with these characters.”
Written by Pooja Tolani (Sarfira, Sacred Games, Lust Stories 2), the show, said Netflix’s Ruchika Kapoor, was yet another example of how Netflix homed in on fresh stories, while Vikram Malhotra stated that his company, Abundantia Entertainment, would hunt for great stories earlier, today, the great stories searched for his company. He also stated that he did not believe in divisions like ‘female-centric’ and ‘male-centric’ but the storyline was of prime importance.
