The Queens, NY-based South Asian Council for Social Services, SACSS, has much to be proud of, among them, staff who are committed to the borough and its residents.

Recently, one of its members,  Mary Archana Fernandez was honored as a Power Woman of Queens by Schneps Media for her impact at SACSS and her role in making Queens a thriving, vibrant community. Fernandex has a decade of experience as a social worker.

That was just one of the highlights of February when the Center buzzed with activity,  from workshops and classes to health screenings and wellness presentations.

This year is especially meaningful for SACSS which is celebrating twenty five years of impact! On May 21, the organization will be hosting its 25th Anniversary Gala at The Taj Pierre, New York.

February also saw a visit from Queens Borough President Donovan Richards Jr. who embarks twice a year on his ‘Borough Hall On Your Block’ meetings, a week-long initiative to connect with communities where they live and work.

“I’m a firm believer that the best way to serve your constituents is to meet them where they are, right in their own communities,” he is quoted saying in the SACSS newsletter.

On Feb. 27, he visited SACSS, recognizing its role in providing healthcare access, mental health support, food security, workforce development, and much more.

“SACSS does phenomenal work in making sure that they’re culturally competent for our communities and making sure people have their basic needs [met] and a place to come together and congregate with people who look like them and talk like them,” he said about his visit.

SACSS also held a program headlined by Dr. Alison Lee, an expert on Pulmonary Medicine and Associate Professor at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. She made a presentation at SACSS’ Senior Center, where she address issues of asthma or COPD, giving practical tips on how to reduce the symptoms around the home.

On February 13th, SACSS, in partnership with United Way of New York City’s Connect2Care program, hosted a vital health screening event, providing essential care directly to the community.

A health screening camp was also held in February where more than 25 clients received comprehensive health checks from a team of four medical providers from SOMOS, including screenings for BMI, blood glucose, cholesterol, and blood pressure. Attendees also had access to COVID-19 vaccines, flu shots, shingles vaccines, and rapid test kits for COVID-19, RSV, and influenza.

For many, this was their first time experiencing primary healthcare, SACSS noted.
