The Los Angeles City Council unanimously approved Mayor Karen Bass’s appointment of Navdeep Singh (Duncan) Sachdeva to the Central Area Planning Commission (APC), January 22, 2025.

Commissioner Sachdeva becomes the third Indian American of the Sikh faith to hold an appointed position in Los Angeles city government, following Dr. Amarjit Singh Marwah, who served on the Cultural Heritage and Hollywood Art Commission, and Nirinjan Singh Khalsa, who served on the Human Relations Commission, a press release from Sachdeva said.

“With my background in real estate and community engagement, I will work to uphold transparency, balance economic development with neighborhood integrity, and contribute to a planning process that reflects the needs of both current residents and future generations,” Sachdeva said.

The Central Area Planning Commission is one of seven regional commissions in Los Angeles, each tasked with quasi-judicial authority over land use and zoning matters within their respective districts.

As a commissioner, Sachdeva will hear and decide appeals on land use determinations, including conditional use permits (CUPs), variances, zoning adjustments, and parcel map decisions. The APC serves as the final decision-making body in many cases, with rulings that directly impact economic development, housing policy, and neighborhood planning.

Sachdeva has more than a decade of experience in real estate asset and portfolio management, and is expected to lend his expertise to the Commission as they relate to land use policies, economic development, and sustainable urban planning.

Sachdeva has served in civic organizations like the Los Feliz Neighborhood Council and the Los Feliz Improvement Association.

“I am honored to serve on the Central Area Planning Commission and grateful for the trust placed in me by Mayor Karen Bass and the Los Angeles City Council,” Sachdeva said. “This role carries a profound responsibility to ensure that land use decisions are made fairly, equitably, and in the best interest of all stakeholders.”
