The Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Paralympic Games offer far more than athletic competition. Even beyond the official venues, visitors and spectators can immerse themselves in a vibrant mix of sports, culture, and community activities while watching the world’s leading Paralympians compete.

Since the start of the year, Milano Cortina 2026 has been attracting widespread attention. More than a major sporting event, the Games have created an atmosphere that extends throughout the host cities, generating a shared sense of celebration and participation.

Milano, located on the plains, and Cortina d’Ampezzo in the mountains, lie roughly 411 kilometers apart and together represent two distinct faces of Italy. Beyond serving as co-host cities, they also reflect an evolving model for hosting large-scale sporting events. By combining urban centers with mountainous landscapes, the organizers have experimented with a format that blends metropolitan and alpine environments, an approach that has so far produced encouraging results.

The idea of spreading the Winter Games across a region covering several thousand square kilometers may appear ambitious. Yet Italy has sought to demonstrate that such a model can bring the Games closer to communities. Opening ceremonies across multiple venues and clusters, and the decision to host the Winter Olympics closing ceremony at a non-sporting venue, the historic Arena di Verona, illustrate an effort to take the spectacle of sport directly to the public rather than requiring fans to travel long distances.

For many journalists and media organizations, however, the distributed format presents challenges. Covering events spread across mountainous regions requires significant time, logistical planning, and financial resources, which not all outlets possess.

Even so, the Italian Paralympic Winter Games have created numerous opportunities for visitors to experience the spirit of the event without holding competition tickets. Fans and curious visitors alike can take part in activities and spaces designed to bring them closer to the excitement of the Games.

One of the central elements of this experience is the network of fan villages. Although the concept is familiar to Olympic audiences, these venues remain a vital part of the Paralympic atmosphere. Open to the public free of charge from March 6, the fan villages provide spaces where fans, families, and visitors can gather in a festive environment.

At these locations, visitors can watch competitions live on large screens, participate in interactive activities, try winter sports demonstrations, and explore initiatives from event partners while discovering elements of local culture and tradition. The fan villages serve as meeting points where spectators can celebrate together and share the emotions of the Games.

Both Milano and Cortina d’Ampezzo have been energized by these fan zones. In Milano, the central hub is Piazza del Cannone, where programming began on March 6 and will continue through the closing ceremony. In Cortina d’Ampezzo, the main gathering point is Largo delle Poste, where a large screen broadcasts competitions throughout the Games.

Several National Paralympic Committees, including those of Austria, Germany, Canada, and Switzerland, have also established dedicated “houses” where fans, athletes, and officials can gather to celebrate and share the Paralympic spirit. These venues highlight national identity through cultural displays, traditions, cuisine, and festive programs, creating distinctive cultural landmarks during the Games.

Visitors at these houses can watch competitions live, take part in medal celebrations, and learn more about the participating countries. For supporters, cultural enthusiasts, or those simply seeking to experience the international spirit of the Paralympics, the NPC Houses offer a unique opportunity to engage with the global sporting community. Some of these spaces are also open to the public, further expanding opportunities for visitors to take part in the celebration.
