Disasters of the Mega-Stars

We all know of the mega-busters in Hindi cinema.

Sholay, by virtue of it being the biggest hit in the history of Indian cinema, is naturally the greatest success of Dharmendra, Hema Malini, Sanjeev Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan nee Bhaduri. Gadar—Ek Prem Katha is also the biggest hit ever of Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel. And so on.

In recent time, Chhaava (Vicky Kaushal-Rashmika Mandanna), Kantara The Legend: Chapter One (Rishabh Shetty), Saiyaara (Ahan Pandey-Aneet Padda) and the likes have grossed sums that make the 100 crore grossers almost defunct in comparison, ditto Mahavtar Narsimha and others.

Notably, it is seen that the Hindi cinema folks have been nowhere as successful. Yes, Sitaare Zameen Par, Raid 2 and very few others have done well, but none have created hysteria. And but for sporadic blockbusters like Pathaan, Jawaan, Gadar 2 and Animal, the superstar carnival has been largely anointed with successes and also-rans in the last three years.

Perhaps then, for the record, it will be as well to look at the biggest calamities we got from the big names. But with the ‘rider’ that Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan have still got the ‘least unsuccessful’ of them, we can see why they are still considered to have an edge over the competition! Here we go, as per the source, Cinehub. The figures are thus as per their statements. And use the most reliable index that is shorn of variables—theatrical footfalls.

Shah Rukh Khan: 5.5 million / Jab Harry Met Sejal

Salman Khan: 5.3 million / Sikandar

Hrithik Roshan: 4.2 million / Vikram Vedha

Aamir Khan: 2.8 million / Laal Singh Chaddha

Kartik Aaryan: 2 million / Shehzada

Ranbir Kapoor: 1.4 million / Shamshera

Ranveer Singh: 8 million / Jayeshbhai Jordaar

Akshay Kumar: 8 million / Selfiee

Ajay Devgn: 5 million / Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha

As is axiomatic, a film makes (or has the potential to unmake) a star, not the other way round.
