Indian American Representative Dr. Ami Bera (D-CA) announced that the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General (OIG) has begun auditing mail theft prevention efforts in Sacramento County.

The audit, initiated at Dr. Bera’s request, aims to address the region’s rising mail theft issues. Last week, OIG investigators conducted unannounced visits to postal facilities in Sacramento to assess current mitigation measures.

“I have heard directly from constituents throughout Sacramento County about their frustrations with stolen or missing mail, which disrupts daily lives and raises concerns about sensitive information, medication, and other essential items being stolen,” said Dr. Bera in a press statement. “Every resident of Sacramento County deserves the peace of mind that their mail will arrive securely and on time. I am committed to holding the U.S. Postal Service accountable and ensuring they take the necessary steps to protect our community’s mail.”

The OIG will brief Congressman Bera’s office on their findings before the public release of the final report and recommendations.

“I appreciate the Office of Inspector General fulfilling my request for this much-needed audit and their dedication to uncovering areas where improvements are needed,” said Dr. Bera adding “Over the next couple of months, I will closely monitor the progress of this audit as we work to ensure that Sacramento County residents receive reliable and secure mail service.”

This announcement builds on Congressman Bera’s continued commitment to enhancing mail services in Sacramento County. Last year, he addressed a letter to Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, drawing attention to the rising instances of mail theft and vandalism in the area.

Residents affected by mail theft are encouraged to report incidents to the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.
