Sylhet, Apr 11 (UNI): Bangladesh’s measles outbreak continues to worsen as two more children died on Saturday within the span of 24 hours, one in Dhaka and the other in Sylhet, adding to the mounting casualties.

As per data from the Directorate General of Health, since March 15, a total of 145 children have died from measles-like symptoms, with 24 confirmed to have succumbed to measles. The numbers reflect both the spread of the disease and gaps in confirmation and diagnosis capacity.

In just the last 24 hours, 553 children were admitted to hospitals with symptoms consistent with measles, while 80 cases were confirmed through testing. The burden remains heaviest in the Dhaka division, where 268 new symptomatic cases were recorded — more than any other region. At the other end of the spectrum, Rangpur division reported just four new admissions.

Hospitals are seeing a constant churn of patients. Over the same period, 413 children with measles symptoms were discharged after recovery, including 196 from Dhaka and 68 from the Chittagong division.

Part of a broader trend of sustained transmission across the country, especially among those children outside the ambit of vaccination coverage, within the past 28 days alone, over 14,385 people have reported measles-like symptoms across the country.

Of them, an estimated 9,463 required hospitalization, while 2,489 cases were confirmed to be measles. So far, 7,222 patients have recovered and returned home as health authorities continue efforts to contain the outbreak.
