Trump Administration Announces U.S. Withdrawal From 66 International Organizations Citing Sovereignty and Cost Concerns

President Donald Trump has announced that the United States will withdraw from 66 international organizations, including 35 non-UN bodies and 31 United Nations entities, following a review conducted by the Administration of what it described as “wasteful, ineffective, and harmful international organizations.”

In a January 7 statement, the Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the decision was made pursuant to Executive Order 14199, under which President Trump directed a comprehensive review of U.S. participation in international organizations. The department noted that reviews of additional organizations under the executive order remain ongoing.

“The Trump Administration has found these institutions to be redundant in their scope, mismanaged, unnecessary, wasteful, poorly run, captured by the interests of actors advancing their own agendas contrary to our own, or a threat to our nation’s sovereignty, freedoms, and general prosperity,” Secretary Rubio said in the statement.

Secretary Rubio underscored the administration’s position in a social media post. Secretary Rubio noted, “These withdrawals keep a key promise President Trump made to Americans – we will stop subsidizing globalist bureaucrats who act against our interests. The Trump Administration will always put America and Americans first.”

According to the statement, President Trump has made clear that he no longer believes it is acceptable for the United States to continue sending the “blood, sweat, and treasure” of the American people to institutions that deliver little or no tangible benefit in return.

“The days of billions of dollars in taxpayer money flowing to foreign interests at the expense of our people are over,” Secretary Rubio said.

The statement further argued that many international organizations, initially established as practical mechanisms for “peace and cooperation,” have evolved into a broad system of global governance that is often dominated by “progressive ideology” and increasingly disconnected from national interests.

It cited initiatives ranging from DEI mandates and “gender equity” campaigns to climate policies as examples of what it described as a globalist agenda rooted in the discredited concept of the “End of History.”

According to the administration, such organizations actively seek to constrain U.S. sovereignty and are supported by elite multilateral networks, referred to in the statement as the “NGO-plex,” which the administration said it has begun dismantling through actions including the closure of USAID.

“We will not continue expending resources, diplomatic capital, and the legitimizing weight of our participation in institutions that are irrelevant to or in conflict with our interests,” the statement said. “We reject inertia and ideology in favor of prudence and purpose. We seek cooperation where it serves our people and will stand firm where it does not.”
