US National Gatka Championship Set for October 10 in New York

Gatka Federation USA will host the fourth US National Gatka Championship on October 10, 2026, at the Sikh Center of New York Inc., bringing together athletes from state associations for competitions across several age divisions.

The championship will be held under the auspices of the World Gatka Federation, according to a statement from Gatka Federation USA. Members of the Sikh Center’s management committee recently unveiled the event poster.

Dr. Deep Singh, general secretary of Gatka Federation USA, said the event will be the organization’s fourth open national championship. He said the federation has also been developing state chapters and organizing training camps with local gurdwara committees, educational institutions and sports organizations.

“Our mission goes beyond competition. We are building a structured foundation for Gatka in the United States,” Singh said. “This national championship offers a unified platform for athletes, coaches, referees, and judges to refine their skills and prepare for future international tournaments.”

Federation President Kalvinder Singh Fresno said the championship will include technical skill demonstrations in the under-14 open division. Single-Soti combat events are scheduled for the under-18 and under-22 open divisions for Singhs and Kaurs, along with under-25 all-fight events for Kaurs.

Bhai Gagandeep Singh AKJ, a trustee of Gurdwara Sikh Cultural Society New York, and Jaskirat Singh, joint secretary of the New York Gatka Association, said the championship offers younger generations an opportunity to connect with the history and discipline of the Sikh martial art.

Community leaders, sports organizers and coaches attended the poster unveiling, including Westchester County activist Sarabjit Kaur; Sarabjit Singh DDT; and New York Gatka coaches Sujan Singh Budha Dal, Jasved Singh, Gurpreet Singh Patiala and Baljinder Singh Banwait.
