King City, Ontario: Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) lifted the 2025 Canadian College and University Cricket (CCUC) TD Cup National Championship, defeating the University of Toronto Scarborough Campus (UTSC) by 38 runs at the Maple Leaf Cricket Ground on October 4.

In the third-place playoff, Ontario Tech University registered a commanding 10-wicket victory over Brock University.

This year’s CCUC TD Cup emerged as a flagship national tournament, featuring 12 college and university teams from across Canada, representing institutions from coast to coast. Among the participants were Wilfrid Laurier University, Conestoga College, Ontario Tech University, Brock University, TMU, Durham College, University of Toronto St. George (UTSG), and UTSC.

Peter Donahue, associate director of International Student Support at Wilfrid Laurier University, said cricket is making rapid strides in Canadian universities and colleges. He traveled from Waterloo to King City to attend the national championship.

The Maple Leaf Cricket Complex in King City, Canada’s first International Cricket Council-certified facility, boasts five turf wickets and regularly hosts Toronto and District League matches.

Obaid Ullah Babar, co-founder and Chief Operating Officer of Canadian College Cricket and a TMU alumnus, said he introduced the tournament in 2015. “Since then, it has been gaining in popularity,” he noted. “Now nearly 40 institutions, including colleges and universities from coast to coast, have taken to the game seriously.” Babar, originally from Peshawar, Pakistan, has played a key role in nurturing collegiate cricket in Canada.

In the championship final, TMU, batting first, posted 142 for five, thanks to an unbeaten half-century by opener Isiah Fernandes, who reached the milestone with a six off the final delivery. Aarav Kuyeskar contributed 30, while Arjun Nagpal (2/18) and Jai Patel (2/16) kept the scoring in check for UTSC.

Chasing 142, UTSC was bowled out for 104 in 16.3 overs, with Kunal (2/12) and Shazil Sulman (3/14) leading the bowling effort. Saad Ur Rahman (32) and Eran Maliduwapathirana (21) provided brief resistance.

In the third-place match, Ontario Tech’s openers, Fayaz Ahmad Momand (75 not out) and Hariansh Chaudhary (25 not out), chased down Brock University’s 115 in just 8.5 overs, completing a dominant 10-wicket win. Brock’s innings earlier featured Syed Ahmed Abdullah (37) and Mikayl (29), while Yusuf Baporia (3/5) and Vyom Patel (2/9) starred with the ball for Ontario Tech.
