The March Denizens

March, the third month of the year, is a birth month for several colorful talents in Hindi cinema. Holi and also Gudi Padwa, the Hindu calendar New Year, usually falls in this month. This year, even Ramzan Eid is there too.

Here we list some of the most accomplished names from cinema that were born this month.

Tiger Shroff (March 2)

The first of the star-kids of the big-name heroes who began in the 1980s (Anil Kapoor, Sunny Deol and Aamir Khan being the others), Jackie Shroff’s son began his innings with Heropanti, followed by Baaghi, which even went on to become a franchise. A sports freak (his original ambition was to become a professional in that field), Tiger, despite an action image (or because of it?) has kids as his crazy fans. Of late, he is going through a rough patch though.

Shankar Mahadevan (March 3)

He’s versatile, language-wise and music-wise. Hindi and Marathi films as composer (with Ehsaan and Loy as Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy), this highly-trained (Hindustan, Carnatic and Jazz) musician first made a mark as a singer. His highs as singer and co-composer traverse Hindi, Marathi, Tamil, Malayalam and English films and albums. The Padma Shri as well as National and Grammy awards and more are already in his kitty.

Shraddha Kapoor (March 3)

Shakti Kapoor’s daughter has shown her ability to carry films on her shoulder (Aashiqui 2, Stree, Stree 2, Chhichhoreand even the appreciated Luv Ka The End). That apart, she has done films like ABCD: Anybody Can Dance, Ek Villainand others. Shraddha is related on her mother, Shivangi Kolhapure’s side to the Mangeshkar family and has also sung professionally.

Janhvi Kapoor (March 6)

Decidedly the most promising and versatile among the female finds of the last decade, Janhvi Kapoor has showed her mettle right from her debut film, Dhadak in 2018, to movies like Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl, Bawaal, Mili, Mr & Mrs Mahi, Param Sundari and Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari besides the Oscar-nominated Homebound. Undoubtedly genetically blessed with mother Sridevi’s genes, Boney Kapoor’s daughter needs that one blockbuster to make her hit deserved big time.

Anupam Kher (March 7)

He is the ultimate proof that one can start late and go places, that too with a debut film (Saaransh), in which he played an old man! There is no genre this chameleon has not attempted (successfully) and he has even worked internationally. Director, writer, producer and even singer—he’s been all. Tanvi—The Great is his latest triumph as actor-director and his recent impacts have been in Metro…In Dino, The Vaccine War, Uunchai and The Kashnir Files among—hold your breaths—over 500 films in 42 years!

Shreya Ghoshal (March 12)

Rohit Shetty and Shreya Ghoshal: Publicity Photos

Many say that she is the finest talent this side of Alka Yagnik and Kavita Krishnamurthi, and they are justified. Trained extensively in Hindustani classical, she packed a wallop with her debut film, Devdas, quickly showcased her versatility with Jism and Saaya and has since then been a consistent dazzler. In a career of 24 years, the lady has picked up 5 National awards for 6 songs in Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Tamil and Telugu!

Aditya Dhar (March 12)

This date seems lucky for film folk: writer-producer and also director Aditya Dhar, born on March 12 too, happens to be the maker of the highest grosser ever in Hindi cinema—Dhurandhar—but also of the whopper hit, URI—The Surgical Strike. What’s more, the young man has written and produced the highly-entertaining Dhoom Dhaam and the innovative Baramulla. And to think the man began his career as a lyricist (Kabul Express) and writer (Aakrosh /2010)!

Rohit Shetty (March 14)

His forte are rip-roaring comedies and action dramas, and each genre blends the other seamlessly! Son to actor and action Czar M.B. Shetty, he has also been a fitness freak and television host on Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi. The Golmaal and Singham franchises, their kid versions on the small screen, as well as his Cop Universe (Singham, Simmba, Sooryavanshi) and a record 10 films (the highest score) among a total of 16 releases (of which only two were certified flops!) sketch out his amazing grasp of the people’s pulse.

Aamir Khan (March 14)

Nothing new needs to be added about this superstar who began as a child actor in Yaadon Ki Baraat and has made his mark also as filmmaker, writer and singer!

Farida Jalal (March 14)

From the cherubic young lead in Taqdeer (1967) to a host of leads, parallel roles and supporting roles, metamorphosing into a mother and now grandmother, Farida Jalal’s career has been a glorious never-ending parade. Her latest high is her essay of the expletive-spewing grandma of O’Romeo: a first for her hitherto lovable image!

Alia Bhatt (March 15)

Though married to Ranbir Kapoor and a mother now, this daughter of Mahesh Bhatt continues to be the Numero Uno today and has recently turned producer as well.  Student of the Year, Highway, 2 States, Dear Zindagi, Udta Punjab, Gully Boy, Raazi, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, her own production  Darlings, her husband’s co-production, Brahmastra: Part 1—Shiva, Gangubai Kathiawadi and now Alpha (as YRF’s first female lead in the Spy Universe) and Love & War—what else is needed to indicate her supremacy?

Rani Mukerji (March 21)

This year, she has marked 30 years in cinema after her sparkling debut in Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat and is the first actress to have a franchise in her name—Mardaani, where each successive part is more successful—and intense. Daughter to filmmaker Ram Mukerji and now Aditya Chopra’s wife, Rani has concentrated on strong woman characters in recent times—a list that encompasses Hichki and Mrs. Chatterjee Vs. Norway as well.

Akshaye Khanna (March 28)

Slow and steady—and stunning. Uncompromising in his unconventional choices from the start of his career that is now in its 30th year, Akshaye Khanna made 2025 his own after featuring as villain in both the year’s biggest hits, Dhurandhar and Chhaava, essaying real-life characters in both. Vinod Khanna’s elder son has nothing to prove as an actor after Border, Taal, Dil Chahta Hai, Humraaz, Hungama, Section 375 and others but still remains choosy, as in Drishyam 2 and the forthcoming Ikka. He is at best in the gray role zone but has shown his range otherwise as well.
