Belgium secured its first-ever Sultan Azlan Shah Cup with a narrow 1-0 victory over India in the final held in Ipoh, Malaysia, on November 30, 2025. Despite a spirited performance, India was undone by an early second-half goal from Thibeau Stockbroekx and had to settle for the silver medal. The result marked India’s second loss to Belgium within the week.

Belgium finished the six-nation tournament as the only unbeaten team, winning all its matches except for a draw against Canada. In the classification games, Canada notched its second win over Korea to secure fifth place, while New Zealand defeated host Malaysia to claim the bronze medal.

The final lived up to expectations, offering an intense and tactical contest between two evenly matched sides. India entered the match on the back of a dominant 14-3 victory over Canada but was unable to convert any of its three penalty corners, despite strong tournament performances from Jugraj Singh, Amit Rohidas, and Sanjay. Belgium’s disciplined defense proved impenetrable throughout the match.

India’s only defeats of the tournament came at the hands of Belgium, which had earlier edged past them 3-2 in the league stage. In the final, both teams delivered a gripping first half marked by tactical discipline and sharp goalkeeping. Belgium enjoyed greater ball possession and generated early pressure, forcing two penalty corners, but India successfully held them off.

With the score tied 0-0 at halftime, Belgium intensified its attacks in the third quarter and eventually broke the deadlock in the 34th minute through Stockbroekx. India responded with a high press and increased circle entries but was unable to find an equalizer. In the closing quarter, the Indian side made several desperate attempts, but Belgium’s structured defense maintained composure and managed the clock effectively to secure the win.

In the bronze medal match, New Zealand defeated Malaysia 6-1 to finish third. Canada also capped its campaign on a positive note, edging Korea 4-3, reinforcing its earlier pool-stage victory over the same opponent.

Belgium’s maiden title and undefeated run underscore its rising strength in international hockey, while India’s young squad showed resilience despite missing experienced players like Manpreet Singh and Hardik Singh.
